Linux

The terminal underneath almost every server.

Almost all the software we deploy ends up running on Linux: an AWS instance, a Docker container, the runner of a continuous integration pipeline. When something breaks in production, the conversation goes through a terminal, and knowing how to read logs, check processes and permissions or figure out why a service will not start saves hours. At TintoDev we use Linux every day to manage servers, automate deployments with Bash scripts and debug containers. This category starts from that reality: we prioritise courses that put you in a terminal from the first lesson, explain the reasoning behind each command and go as far as service administration, networking and basic security. We leave out the ones that stay on the graphical desktop. There is good material in Spanish for the basics, and reference courses in English for advanced administration and certifications.

Who it is for

  • Developers who ship applications and freeze up when they have to SSH into a server.
  • Anyone heading towards DevOps, cloud or cybersecurity, where Linux is taken for granted.
  • Windows or macOS users who have never opened a terminal and want to get past the fear.
  • Support staff who inherited servers set up by someone who left no documentation.

What you will learn

  • The terminal without fear: navigating the file system, searching, filtering and chaining commands with pipes.
  • Users, groups and permissions, which explain a good share of the strange errors on a server.
  • Bash for automation: variables, conditionals, loops and scripts you can schedule with cron.
  • Processes and services with systemd: starting them, inspecting them and reading their logs.
  • Networking from the terminal and secure remote access with SSH keys.
  • Server maintenance: packages, updates, disk space and backups.

Recommended order

  1. Terminal and file system first, practising in a virtual machine or in WSL if you are on Windows.
  2. Permissions, processes and packages, which is what you will touch on any server.
  3. Bash and automation, once you are repeating tasks worth turning into a script.
  4. Server administration and networking at the end, ideally on a cloud instance you set up yourself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn Linux?

Terminal basics take a few weeks if you use it every day. Running a server comfortably, with services, permissions, networking and scripts, takes several months of practice. The fastest route is to make Linux your everyday working environment, not just something you touch during the course.

Which Linux distribution should I learn on?

Ubuntu or Debian, because they are among the most widely used on cloud servers and are well documented. If you are interested in enterprise environments or Red Hat certifications, also practise on a distribution from that family, such as Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux. The concepts carry over; mostly the package manager and a few paths change.

Do I need to install Linux on my computer?

No. You can practise in a virtual machine, in WSL if you are on Windows, or on a small cloud instance. What matters is having a terminal at hand every day, not replacing your operating system.

Do I need Linux for DevOps and cloud?

Yes, it is the foundation. Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines and most cloud servers run on Linux, and courses on those topics assume you already know your way around a terminal. Learning it first stops every permissions error from looking like a problem with the tool.

Are there Linux courses in Spanish?

Yes: the catalogue mixes courses in Spanish and English, and each course page shows its language. For the terminal and Bash there is a good range in Spanish; for advanced administration and certification prep, the reference material is usually in English.
